St. Clare in Southwest Portland again fielded a team for the Rebuilding Together Portland effort Saturday, April 30. Some volunteers brought experience in home improvements and others simply brought good will and a willingness to take directions.

Rebuilding Together Portland, which stores supplies on the campus of the University of Portland, brings skilled tradesmen and general volunteers together to work on home improvements for Portland homeowners who are generally low income, disabled or elderly. This year’s teams worked on 22 different homes.

The National Rebuilding Day is the last Saturday in April.

The organization takes applications from people who might need a team of workers — painting, cleaning out an overgrown backyard, doing small carpentry or electrical repairs, or installing grab bars or smoke detectors.

Applicants need to own their home, live in the home and be unable to do the work themselves. They also need to live in Portland.

The group is currently focusing primarily on outdoor safety and health repairs, mindful of keeping both the homeowners and the volunteer teams safe.
