Father John Kerns showed astute Old Testament knowledge — plus keen acting, singing and technical skills — in a video he released on YouTube March 31.

Father Kerns, pastor of Our Lady of the Lake Parish in Lake Oswego, like many priests has gotten creative in efforts to reach people during the coronavirus lockdown. He has made frequent video reflections since mid-March.

But on March 31, he went to a new level, portraying a narrator and four characters in a storytelling and musical interpretation of the story of the brave trio from the book of Daniel — Shadrach, Meshach and Abednego. The three refused to worship Babylonian deities and were thrown into a hot furnace to be executed. But they survived and an angel of the Lord joined them to sing amid the flames.

In addition to playing everybody in the split screen, Father Kerns became a barbershop quintet to sing a swinging original song about the story.

The four-minute video has been viewed more than 2,000 times.
