Holy Cross Father Jim Lies will not accept the offer to serve as interim president of the University of Portland, reports the university’s newspaper, The Beacon.

The news came in a campuswide email March 12 from Thomas Arndorfer, chair of the Board of Regents.

Father Lies was scheduled to take over the role in July after the university’s current president, Holy Cross Father Mark Poorman, steps down.

“While honored to have been offered the position, he [Father Lies] has come to believe that his skills are better suited elsewhere in his service to God and the mission of the Congregation of Holy Cross,” Arndorfer reportedly wrote in the email. “On behalf of the Board of Regents, I thank him for considering the position.”

Arndorfer said the Board of Regents would begin looking for someone to fill the position immediately. Father Poorman announced his resignation in February and Father Lies’ appointment to serve as interim University president was announced then.
