For centuries, the Catholic Church has dedicated November as a month of prayer for the deceased. Since its founding in 1901, the University of Portland has observed the custom.

Holy Cross Father Mark Poorman, president of U.P., recently invited the faithful to join the university in prayer for family and friends who have died.

The North Portland school has a webpage where individuals may share the name of a loved one. “We will remember them in our Masses and prayers throughout November,” said Father Poorman in a statement. To include a name for the communal prayers, go to go.sentinel.org/34ELSoA.
