Regarding “What if war money had gone elsewhere?” Sept. 17, Page 18: The Catholic News Service article quotes multiple writers’ musings on spending trillions of military budget dollars on various favorite projects. One executive director speaks of “an opportunity for us to spend our money differently.” He has it wrong; there is no money. We have massive debt.

The more important question is, “Why can’t we control our spending?” The U.S. federal government debt is unknown but surely exceeds $30 trillion. Imposing this debt burden on future generations is immoral. The future holds crushing interest payments to be borne by our children or we default on our obligations. Neither represents social justice.
