Regarding “How God handles it,” March 6, Page 23:

In regard to COVID-19, there is no evidence that God had anything to do either with its development or with its dispersal. It is the human tendency to be irresponsibly omnivorous that long ago set up the mechanism and market that has made zoonotic diseases — diseases that jump from animals to humans — survive and thrive throughout our history.

Patients who came down with COVID-19 at the end of December all had connections to the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan, China. There’s lots of water, blood, fish scales and chicken guts. The Huanan Seafood Market is only one of many not only in China, but throughout other countries and continents.

In Genesis, and throughout the rest of Scripture, we learn how man and woman ignored God’s words and instructions, starting with pride, disobedience and murder. Can people of faith reasonably ask, “Why did God allow this?” Should they not rather acknowledge that God had nothing to do with humanity’s pride, disobedience or lack of respect for life, and the resulting and accumulating consequences?

God does offer us the graces to deal with our human missteps, to deal with the suffering that we cause our family, to reconcile our family and to face as one family the “natural processes” that God’s ongoing creation has and will continue to present us.
