I heard three themes from my parish’s synodal meeting.

Keeping women out of leadership leads women to worship elsewhere. How can they attend when they are found unworthy of leadership positions because of their gender? The theology that they can’t be priests “because Jesus and his disciples were men” is completely medieval and lazy thinking.

Our attitude toward gay and lesbian people is outdated and wrong. People are born as they are and as Pope Francis says, “God doesn’t make mistakes.” They need to be welcomed into our church. When a person is driven away because he’s gay, that person’s entire Catholic family leaves too. Family bonds are stronger than ancient, uninformed views.

Clericalism is a threat, separating people from God.

I heard someone say that, if we continue down our current path, we may be the last generation in the church.
