Regarding “A gun culture of death,” June 3, Page 27:

The statement “Oregon, to our credit, is one of 15 states with permit-to-purchase laws” is inaccurate. Oregon does not require prospective gun purchasers to obtain a license prior to buying a gun. There are requirements for certain circumstances (such as concealed carry) and certain restrictions on who can possess a gun. But Oregon is not a permit to purchase state.

Editor’s note: Patty McMahon is right. There are petitions circulating for a November initiative that would require permitting in Oregon, among other gun safety measures.
