Solicitude for the orphan and the poor is not only in accordance with the Christmas spirit but is of the essence of Christianity and should be cultivated at other times as well as at Christmas. A real love of our fellows which the law of Christ insists upon would lead us not merely to open-handed giving at Christmas but to a real interest in the alleviation of suffering throughout the year. And as a large part of the problem of poverty is a social problem we should join our forces with those who are trying to better social conditions.
