Regarding “Racism and resilience: An overview of Catholic African American history,” Aug. 7, Pages 10-12, and “Oregon African American Catholics’ legacy of joy amid injustice,” Aug. 21, Page 1:

I thank and commend the Catholic Sentinel for the recent and remarkable two-part series on the history of Black parishioners in our archdiocese and the racism and evil these Catholic brothers and sisters have experienced. Writer Katie Scott did a superb job of reviewing our history and documenting some of these heart-rending stories. I am grateful to Sonora Thirdgill, Janet Steverson and Mary Elizabeth Harper for sharing their stories. I have much to learn in how to help us create a more loving and inclusive Catholic Church, and with Jesus’ love guiding us I pray we become that church.
