Regarding “From the Archives,” May 1, Page 1:

In a front page statement from Msgr. Charles Smith from 1955, he spoke against private interpretation of Scripture.

Here we are, 65 years later and eons ahead in terms of scholarly studies in Scripture. Never in human history have we had such access to in-depth translations and commentaries on the Bible.

Yes, one must be prayerful, wise and informed in studying God’s word, but the perspective of the Roman Catholic teaching of that era is from long ago and really not constructive in God’s church today.
