Here is the text of my postcard to President Trump:

Dear Mr. President:

You and I both identify as Christians, as followers of Jesus, which means to go where he goes, and to love whom and what he loves — an assignment more daunting than even the role of U.S. president.

Jesus always moved toward suffering, not away from it. So as followers of Jesus, you and I must commit ourselves daily to move toward suffering, and not away from it.

Maybe preachers don’t remind us of this often enough because they fear we will go away. Many do.

But because I care about you as a fellow Christian, and because I care about our nation and those who turn to us for hope and relief and a better shot at life, I remind you now.

You are in my prayers, Mr. President, especially in this holy season in the Christian calendar.
