Regarding “As ACA effect fades, charity care back on rise,” July 19, Page 9:

The effects of the Affordable Care Act on charity healthcare expenses highlight the evolving nature of the Catholic Church in America and the federal government.

As the article notes, there was a tremendous shift from hospital charity care to care subsidized by the federal government beginning in 2014. In 2017, charitable care began to rise again in Oregon hospitals, including the Providence and PeaceHealth systems. In the past 12 months, we witnessed the actions of our U.S. senators and representatives in the Kavanaugh and Russia hearings.

So, who is preferable to exercise more control over our health care: Congress or the Sisters of Providence?
