Regarding “High hopes for handbook,” April 19, Page 18:

Msgr. Gerard O’Connor informs us that the Archdiocesan Liturgical Handbook is a reiteration of existing guidelines and he is quoted as saying, “It is not about what we like, but about worshipping Almighty God.”

I respect his teaching, but from it I get the message that the same Spirit which may have inspired the New Testament writers, the Church Fathers, the Gregorian Chant, pipe organists, etc., is somehow less active or doctrinally less attractive today.

To my mind, the Spirit moves through us and through time and followers of Christ need to be open to the Spirit’s voice in the present, not downplay its contemporary influence. The grand plan is not ours to control.
