The veneration and honor accorded to St. Joseph by the Catholic Church is not of recent origin, and the decree of His Holiness, Pope Pius IX, by which this great saint is chosen the Patron of the Catholic Church, is merely the culmination of the continually increasing devotion of the faithful to the holy Patriarch, the spouse of the Blessed Mother of God and the foster father of our Lord and Saviour.
