A letter writer in December argued that the church has no right to assert its teachings in the face of government legislation that may restrict choices of individuals, in this case, regulation of certain drugs. Where do we draw the line? Murderers? Thieves? Do not these people have free will too? One may retort with, yes, but the murder and burglary victims do not have free will in the matter, and the laws protect victims. But what about the free will of those who are left picking up the pieces of misery due to drug abuse? Thankfully the church does try to influence legislation for better outcomes in society, and it has every right to do so.
