More church attacks June 19

ROME (CNA) — Gunmen in Nigeria attacked a Catholic church and a Baptist church on June 19, killing three people and reportedly kidnapping more than 30 worshippers.
Armed bandits on motorcycles stormed villages in Nigeria’s northwestern Kaduna state and attacked St. Moses Catholic Church and Maranatha Baptist Church while people were worshiping, local government officials told the Associated Press.
“It was some few minutes after 7a.m. today, while both the Catholic and Baptist churches were holding their services when the kidnappers attacked,” Reuben Buhari, a former spokesman for the local government, told the Nigerian newspaper Vanguard on June 19.
“I spoke to a man whose wife, mother and daughter were taken from the Baptist church today. The anguish in his voice is something none of us should experience,” he said.
A local source told AP that the majority of those kidnapped were from the Baptist congregation, while the three people killed were Catholics.
The attack comes two weeks after 40 Christians were killed in an attack on a Catholic church on Pentecost Sunday. In the June 5 attack, gunmen believed to be Islamic extremists, opened fire on Catholic worshipers attending Pentecost Mass at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, in southwestern Nigeria.
Bishop Emmanuel Badejo of the diocese of Oyo offered a funeral Mass for the victims of the Pentecost Sunday massacre on June 17 and forcefully criticized the government of Nigeria, especially President Muhammadu Buhari, for its perceived inaction in the face of killings of Christians in his country.
More Christians are killed for their faith in Nigeria than in any other country worldwide — at least 4,650 in 2021 and nearly 900 in the first three months of 2022 alone.
According to the UK-based human rights foundation, Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), Nigeria's Kaduna state, where the most recent church attacks took place, has become "an epicenter of kidnapping and violence by non-state actors, despite being the most garrisoned state in Nigeria.”
OWO, Nigeria — The Catholics attending Mass at St. Francis Xavier Church on Pentecost did not know how much it would cost to participate in the suffering of Jesus, said Bishop Emmanuel Badejo of Oyo.

"How much do we understand when he says to us, 'The time is coming when anyone who kills you will think he is doing a holy service to God,'" Bishop Badejo said, quoting from the Gospel of St. John at the June 17 funeral Mass for many of the victims of the massacre at the church. "We had no idea perhaps till now what extreme form that could take."

Hundreds gathered for the funeral and burial of many of the victims -- at least 50 were killed when gunmen spent 20-25 minutes in the church June 5. Among those at the Mass in the St. Francis parish hall were Bishop Jude Arogundade of Ondo, the diocese in which Owo is located, as well as Ondo Gov. Arakunrin Akeredolu.

Bishop Badejo named some of those killed in the massacre: Bridget Ozulumba, 85; Chukwuemeka Emmanuel Njoku, 2; and Mathilda Ogungbade, 3.

"None of these did anything wrong, except that they came to worship God at the foot of the cross and altar on that day," said Bishop Badejo. "There, sudden death was inflicted upon them, and deep sorrow upon their dear ones left behind. These dear ones died, and many others met with trouble while at the foot of the cross."

"People of God, here before us lies Nigeria," the bishop said, noting that the dead were not alone.

"Lying down here with them are the joys and hopes and aspirations of their families and loved ones, of the church of God, of the various communities from where they come, and indeed, of this country, Nigeria. The circumstances of their death are by all standards of sane humanity, most illogical, irrational and unacceptable. Even the ones who are maimed and wounded themselves, wherever they are, represent Nigeria with all her self-inflicted wounds, bruised brutalized and violated."

"Our Christian faith, strong as it is, is thoroughly tested when we remember that the massacre we have just faced is not an isolated case in our country, and that we see little ... to indicate that it might be the last. It has been a long, bloody list, always growing over the last 30-odd years," he said, reciting a litany of deaths beginning with riots in 1987 in northern Nigeria and ongoing kidnappings today.

As a group and individually, Nigerian bishops repeatedly have criticized government officials for doing nothing to stem the nation's increasing violence and insecurity.

"Ritual killings, abductions, murders, lynching, kidnappings, armed robbery still increase the bloody tally of innocent deaths day by day," Bishop Badejo said. "All this goes on while many of our leaders and people in power tweak their fingers, feign deaf and dumb or, worse, still continue with their macabre rallies and dance merely (to) grapple for positions and privileges.

"God is not amused, and judgment will come," he said.

"We are compelled to ask: Nigeria, our leaders, Are you still our leaders? Are we at war? How many more must die? Leaders must be leaders, not mere dealers," he said.

"We must agree with George Orwell who once said, 'A people that elect corrupt politicians, impostors, thieves and traitors and keep them in power are not victims but accomplices," Bishop Badejo said. Citing the Catholic teaching of the moral principle of self-defense, he said, "We Nigerians must take our country back to the path of righteousness."
