Regarding “St. Benedict Lodge: Like an embrace from the Lord,” Aug. 5, Pages 10-11:

After Holy Names Sister John Maureen Backenstos took a sabbatical from teaching literature and writing at Marist High School in Eugene, she spent dozens of years at McKenzie Bridge. There, she served as pastoral assistant at St. Benedict Lodge, as well as representative for St. Vincent de Paul, Neighborhood Watch, religious education instructor, book club discussion leader and ambassador for the Blue River-McKenzie Bridge region.

During that time, she produced the manuscript for her book “Heart and Soul: Selections of Poetry,” later published by her friend, Holy Names Sister Marilyn Nunemaker.

No doubt, Sister John’s legacy endures, well-rooted in the recollections of the many people she ministered to at St. Benedict and beyond.
